Walking with someone

This weekend, I went on a hike with my friend Brendan.

He stopped by the property, and we spent some time at the overlook talking.

Career, direction, spirituality, and everything in between.

After lunch, we set out from the trail just up the road.

The path opened slowly, and the conversation came with us.

— The insight —

The same path doesn’t feel the same every time.

It changes depending on who you’re with.

What’s been said, or left unsaid.

What’s been opened in conversation.

Attention begins to move differently.

Things get noticed that might have been missed alone.

The pace can shift without being discussed.

There’s less effort to direct where things go.

Moments land more fully.

And the experience takes on a different shape.

— The shift —

Take a walk with someone this week.

Let the conversation unfold on its own.

Notice what changes in your attention.

What you begin to see more clearly.

And what doesn’t need to be said.

— From the canyon —

We made our way up past the houses and onto the dirt path.

At one point, we ducked under a wire and kept going.

Wildflowers lined the trail, and I started picking them without thinking.

The ridge revealed itself gradually as we climbed.

The view was familiar, but it didn’t feel the same.
