The next bend in the road

This week I drove through Las Flores Canyon.

I’ve lived in the Santa Monica Mountains for awhile now.

But somehow I’d never explored that particular stretch of road.

A few days after a recent job loss, I found myself wandering there.

— The insight —

Most people think freedom feels good.

Sometimes it does.

But freedom and uncertainty often arrive wearing the same clothes.

When we know exactly what comes next, life feels stable.

When we don’t, the mind immediately begins searching for solid ground.

What’s the plan?

What’s the backup plan?

What happens if that doesn’t work?

Driving through the canyon, I realized something.

For the first time in a long time, I didn’t know exactly what came next.

And yet there was also something strangely spacious about that.

The road kept turning.

The landscape kept unfolding.

I didn’t need to know what was around the next bend to keep moving.

— The shift —

Meditation isn’t always about finding certainty.

Sometimes it’s about becoming comfortable without it.

Trusting that the next section of road will reveal itself when you arrive there.

Not because everything is guaranteed to work out.

But because life has always unfolded one bend at a time.

— Heard this week —

“The path doesn’t become clear before you start walking. It becomes clear because you do.”
