A Corner Comes to Life
There’s a small corner of the property that had long gone unused. A patch of gravel and uneven ground, bordered by succulents and a retaining wall, easy to pass by without noticing. Over time, we began shaping it into something more intentional—a small zen garden, centered around a pond.
The work unfolded slowly across a number of days. Digging out the basin, lining the interior, carrying stones into place one by one. Adjusting the edges, stepping back, then returning again to shift something slightly out of place.
At times it felt like progress, and at others like repetition. Moving dirt, rinsing gravel, repositioning rocks that didn’t quite sit right. The kind of work where the outcome isn’t fully visible until the final pieces come together.
By the end of the weekend, the water was moving. A small stream began to flow from the wooden chest above, through a small bamboo pipe, spilling gently into the pond below. What had been an empty space now holds something steady.
There’s something about working with water that changes the pace of attention. Unlike other parts of the land, it requires a kind of patience. Small adjustments ripple outward. A stone placed slightly off can shift the entire flow.
Over time, I began to notice how the process itself mirrored the intention behind the space. The goal wasn’t to build something visually impressive, but to create a place that felt settled. Balanced enough that nothing called attention to itself.
Most of the work happened in quiet stretches. At times alongside others, at times alone. Conversations would come and go, but the rhythm remained the same—adjust, observe, refine. Slowly, the space began to take on its own character.
Standing there once it was finished, watching the water move through the stones, the shift felt subtle. Nothing dramatic had changed, and yet the space held a different kind of presence. A reminder that sometimes the work is simply learning how to shape something until it feels at ease within its surroundings.
