Eight months ago, fire swept across these ridges, leaving the canyon hushed in blackened soil and silent ash. Walking here then was like stepping into absence, the ground brittle beneath each step, the air still carrying the scent of loss.
Now, as the sun sets over Tuna Canyon, green blades rise through the cracks, grasses lean into the light, and the hillside carries the sound of life again. What seemed empty has returned, not as it was before, but as something changed — and in that change, something beautiful.
The teaching of cycles
Fire and renewal are not opposites. They are companions, part of the same circle. The land teaches us this again and again: endings make way for beginnings, and destruction opens the path for growth.
It is tempting to wish for permanence, to want things to remain untouched. But nature does not cling. It moves forward, it adapts, it begins again. In the charred earth, seeds awaken. In the silence after fire, the song of renewal slowly begins.
What mindfulness can learn from fire
To live mindfully is not to escape difficulty, but to notice it fully and remain present through it. Fire strips the land bare, just as challenges strip us of illusions. Yet within that starkness lies an invitation: to pay attention, to be startled into awareness, to see with new eyes.
In watching the canyon’s recovery, we are reminded that renewal does not erase what came before. The memory of fire remains in the soil, even as new shoots push through. Presence means holding both truths at once — the scar and the sprout, the silence and the song.
Returning to the moment
As I stood on the hillside, the grasses glowing in the last light of day, I felt what the land was teaching: renewal is never far away. The fire was real. The loss was real. And yet, so is this return, this quiet insistence of life.
In meditation, we return again and again to the present moment, no matter how often the mind burns with distraction. Each return is renewal. Each breath is proof that even after fire, life continues.
