Nature, Unfiltered: The Squirrel’s Boldness

📸 Encounter Story

The shot I captured of this little guy is entertaining mostly because of how close he let me get. By the time I snapped the photo, I was practically at arm’s length, half-expecting him to dart away at any second.

But he didn’t. He stood there calmly, paws tucked in, eyes alert, studying me as much as I was studying him. Around here, the squirrels are surprisingly bold. Katy and I often joke that we’re living on Planet of the Squirrels. They move through the property like tiny locals, fully at home and slightly amused by our presence.

🔎 About the Animal

California Ground Squirrels (Otospermophilus beecheyi) are common throughout Topanga. Highly intelligent and deeply social, they live in complex burrow systems and communicate constantly with one another through posture, sound, and movement.

Their comfort around humans comes from generations of coexisting alongside people, learning quickly who poses a threat and who does not. Curious, adaptable, and quick-witted, they are masters of reading their environment.

Meditation Meaning

The squirrel represents alert ease. Fully awake, yet not anxious. Ready to move, but not rushed.

It teaches us that presence does not require rigidity. Awareness can be playful. Attentiveness can include curiosity, humor, and a willingness to linger.

Reflection

In practice and in life, we often think we need to be serious to be mindful. The squirrel offers a different lesson. Joy and mischief can coexist with awareness. Lightness does not mean distraction.

This small encounter reminds us that being present does not always feel profound. Sometimes it feels like standing face to face with a squirrel who has decided, for now, that you’re worth observing.
