Meditation, Michael Scott, and My Sister’s 30th
"Why am I telling you this story?" I said while standing before a group of my family and my sister's friends while giving a toast at her party. I proceeded to explain why I had just shared a story about the Office, the favorite television series of Annie and mine.
Why I Brought Up The Office in a Birthday Toast
"Because I believe there is something about Michael Scott and the other characters that inspires us to laugh at ourselves and not take ourselves too seriously, and that's what I believe Annie and I like about it so much."
The show has been a mutual bonding experience for the two of us, given that we've both watched nearly every episode of each season together at least once. For us, I believe the show has been like a meditation, allowing us some temporary relief from the burdens and responsibilities of everyday life and work.
When Meditation Feels Like a Chore, Turn on a Sitcom
The show has been like medicine, mainly because it has helped us laugh so much. And in this way, it has a very similar effect as meditation. It elevates the endorphins and resets the nervous system whenever you take a little break to watch some good old funny TV.
I think that TV in moderation can be very healthy and although I'm an advocate of meditation, I believe that it can increase stress if not done right. The point of meditation is not to force yourself into a relaxed state but instead to find a balance between relaxation and alertness. But watch a funny show can be pure relaxation.
My Sister, the Walking Reminder to Lighten Up
I'm fortunate to have Annie in my life because every time I'm around her, she makes me laugh. That's as good and usually way better than anything any meditation has every given me. Being around family and friends and laughing — that's one way of connecting with that universal spirit that we all strive for.
Just before my speech ended, I handed her a little bobblehead, reminiscent of a few episodes of the show when the main character, Michael, gives the employees awards. Nothing special, but a little reminder of how much I love her and how grateful I am for her.
I look forward to when Annie comes out to the Topanga property to visit sometime in the coming months.
